If you want to be a full time professional DJ one of the most important pieces of the puzzle is the agent. The agent is an essential team member of your DJ business, they route you tours, book shows, handle inbound requests and everything in between. A lot of artists know how important this is but don't know where to start when it comes to getting signed to a top agent.
Here's how I did it, and this one of the many paths that can be replicated and followed today:
I signed a single in 2013 to Bingo Player's label Hysteria. Once I worked with the label, I was able to meet their entire mgmt team. The single started performing well, then that lead to getting signed to the mgmt team. Then the mgmt fed me in with their agent they already worked with on the bigger artists.
See the key here was getting to a good management team first via the artist label intro. Smaller artist owned labels are one of the grassroots places where the industry looks for new talent. One of the other major advantages small artist labels have over big labels is that it's pretty easy to get in touch an Artist's mgmt team since you did the release with them. When you work with larger labels no artist related teams run them and they can be sort of faceless.
You can really increase your odds of getting into conversations about getting signed to both mgmt and agents, when you have a well performing song on an artist owned label. Agents place a lot of trust in the words of managers and label owners when it comes to spotting new talent. -Henry
