How often should electronic artists release music?
I get this question asked a lot, so I want to dive right in.
From my experience, I think monthly music releases every 4 weeks is the optimal cadence for most dance music artists.
This can vary artist to artist, but 4 weeks gives you just enough time to promote + prioritize each song, and plan before the next one. This also gives you the consistency to be able to cut through the noise where fans consume music fast in the streaming and short form content era. (If you release a little more than this, great! it won't hurt as long as you can create content)
It is not easy to line up a yearly calendar of monthly releases, but if you can do this it can change the outcome of your career. This requires 2 main skills: efficient music workflow and organizational systems. Really focus on getting the workflow and business systems in place to be lining up releases monthly.
So how are these releases split up between originals and remixes?
I think that depends on where you are in your career.
A newer artist might skew more toward free remixes for ease of release and not waiting around for labels...So maybe like 70% remixes 30% originals, while a more seasoned artist might go with more originals vs. remixes.
I think early on in an upcoming artists' career, the consistency and cutting through is important and remixes allow you to do this better.
If you have to focus on one major thing as an electronic artist, I think it's by far figuring out your own system for lining up monthly releases. Everything else is built on this. The content, the business plan, the fans. It's the fuel to the fire.
See ya guys next week!
