As the new year opens, I wanted to go over a simple outline that can help you generate momentum fast in your DJ project.
Sometimes it's hard to know what to focus on that will really push you to the next level. If I started out this year with 0 fans and had to grow to 10,000 by the end of 2024 here's exactly what I'd do:
1. Consistent weekly free remixes
I'd be making a TON of free remixes and edits in whatever subgenre you make. I'd make 2-4 a month, and be specifically remixing songs that have trend and popularity in the culture behind them that DJs are playing, but also remix the artists and songs that you also feel align with your brand and vision too. These ideally would be uploaded to soundcloud and youtube using download gate software such as hyppedit, and then putting your socials to follow to grow those quickly.
It's no surprise that many artists including myself are a huge fan of free remixes, lot of you guys are already doing this. The DJ support is easier and the content is easier to make. There's no rules for the frequency of the free downloads, if you can finish 1 a week, do 1 a week. The more the better early on. The key here is CONSISTENCY. What would the end of your year look like if you'd release 25 remixes?
I found australian hard dance artist Restricted His cadence of releases and the songs he picked to remix were on point and quickly grew his followers on soundcloud the last 2 years to over 100k. He really nailed the right genre, at the right time, and the right songs to remix.
2. Make simple organic content with the remixes
After you finish each remixes, I'd be making a few pieces of organic content for tiktok and reels per remix. In the studio, how you made it, funny skits, lifestyle, playing it out live, etc.
Anything to avoid boring posts with just the artwork, and avoiding words that crush your reach like "out now on these platforms" or "link in bio". People secretly hate feeling like they are being promoted too. Captions matter big time.
I love this video from the artist from above, Restricted. He's murdering the funnel from his organic content to his remixes. Study what type of content is working, and imitate then innovate your own style.
3. Rinse, Repeat, Test
It's that simple, find a cadence with free remixes into engaging organic content, then repeat. Do more of what worked, less of what didn't every time. Ultimately before you even worry about getting originals signed to labels, finding your flow with free remixes allows you to quickly learn what type of content works, and also what types of remixes/genres are resonating. Focusing heavy here will allow you to learn the hard parts of being an artist fast. Once you get this flow figured out, you can start to work in the originals.
