How to grow your Spotify monthly listeners without a big song

Jun 20, 2024

In today's music industry, Spotify Monthly Listeners have become one of the most watched vanity metrics for artists.

Labels, promoters, managers, agents all check this.

Is it the end all be all for a music career? Definitely not, but sometimes it's ok to play the 'game'. If we know that's a metric people are checking, it can't hurt to make an effort to improve it.

Here's a great way to improve your Spotify Monthly listeners without a big hit song:

Put extra focus on getting official remixes.

When you get an official remix uploaded on spotify you get tagged on the other artists profile too and if they have a bigger following, then that feeds into your monthly listeners. You also get to cross pollinate fans and can reach new ones.

The first time I crossed 1mil monthly for a little, was mainly from a Jason Derulo Puri Cono remix. It came from a DM I sent to Puri asking if I could have the stems, then eventually it got sent to the label and made it across the finish line. I took action myself though and knew it was a good fit. This is key, staying proactive and reaching out to artists.

Some more tips for securing more official remixes:

-Target artists that are big but not too big. I had a student that remixed an older Latin band that had a decent profile over the years, and he was able to get in contact with them no problem and get it out. It's now his biggest streaming song on spotify.

-Every time you finish a remix, find the contact for the Artist's mgmt team or record label. Send an email with your remix in the subject line and shoot your shot. Shoot the artist a DM too, getting them to check a demo of a remix of their own song is a hell of a lot easier.

Remember, Artists WANT dance remixes of their songs! Major labels also have boxes to check on dance music remixes and love remix packages to expand DJ play. You have some power if you have a good remix. Lean a little more into trending sub genres too to increase your odds on big artist official remixes.

-Post good video content of the remix and tag the artists. If one of the posts catches some traction, it'll be a lot easier for the artist and their team to take action on making the remix official.

Don't be scared to play the game a little in this business, you need everything you can get in your favor sometimes. Also do not be afraid to reach out and send your remixes to artists and their teams!

See ya next week.
