Releasing consistent remixes is one of the best tools in a DJ's toolbox to grow FAST.
Remixes get you more exposure, DJ support is easier, the content gets more clicks, they're fun to make and the list goes on to all the benefits.
I've released tons of remixes throughout my career, but there's one trick I always apply when remixing to consistently make big impactful remixes, like my Skrillex, Fred Again Rumble Remix from earlier this year or my Chase & Status - Baddadan Remix that just went viral on instagram.
It's all about timing.
I always think about timing my remix around the song's peak hype in music culture. Too early and nobody cares yet, too late the hype is gone. Timing is everything.
I carefully select the songs I remix, not only do I have to LOVE the song, but I also want to think about riding the primary artist's momentum too and timing that perfectly. (classics are an exception)
My 'Rumble' remix was ideally timed, it was the return of Skrillex and his new album, Fred Again was one of the most hyped new artists out there, and Flowdan's sound is HOT. I was able to make one of the first bass house remixes and get it out at the perfect time a few weeks after the release. It was a perfect storm, and that remix moved the needle for me more than most of my originals did this year. The video clips also got hundreds of thousands of views on tiktok and IG due to the associated artist names on it!
I see a lot of DJs making the mistake of holding on to new remixes too long and waiting to release them and not acting. Music and culture moves fast you have to act fast if you want to capitalize. I also see new artists not strategically selecting songs that will generate momentum for them. Artist careers are a momentum game and timing is crucial to that. I hope this framework helps you guys level up your remix game!
