Malcom Gladwell says the 3 types of people needed to make ideas go big are:
1. Connectors - Those with a massive social network and are skilled at making friends and connections.
2. Salesman - Those who pitch the idea and spread the message and get people to jump onboard.
3. Mavens - Those that are very skilled and knowledgable about a topic and don't mind sharing this information and helping others.
Myself and a few friends started our own dance music club night in the early 2010's in Orlando FL called 'RIOT'. Within 6 months of starting our club night we had a sold out weekly night that was buzzing throughout the whole state. At the time none of us really had a profile online or hit music releases. We just had built something special within the dance music culture of our city, that went on to become the launching pad of some of our careers in music.
After reverse engineering some of Gladwell's principles, I realized our collective of friends had all 3 types of people required to make ideas go big.
Myself the connector. I had been well networked on my college campus and in a fraternity. I knew tons of people in greek life and in the nightlife scene and was able to get a lot of my connections to attend and participate in our night early on.
Matt, Dallas, and Graham the mavens. All three of these guys were talented at music. From the start they always liked to share their knowledge and were constantly seeking to improve. I remember all of us staying up until the sun came up every week experimenting in Ableton and making music.
Nick the salesman. Our friend Nick was a clothing company designer, he was great at branding and a smooth talker and negotiator. He initially helped work out the deal with the club and pitched them idea.
We each had different skillsets that complimented each other and allowed our little club night to tip into something larger.
