Earlier this year I randomly posted a music related reel on Instagram that ended up being my highest performing one EVER. With a total of 543k views, I was extremely shocked given it was just me in the studio playing back music I had made over the years.
Here are the key takeaways I learned from making that and some tips you can use when making DJ social media content :
- The posts you never expect to go big, can go big so don't overthink it. I initially did not want to post it because I thought it was cheesy (lol it kinda is). I sat there thinking I am not posting this piece of content it sucks, I even sent it to trusted friends for edit feedback and just got a meh reaction. So to test it out, I posted it on facebook first (lower stakes), saw the engagement within 15 mins then decided ok this is working and put it on tik tok and reels immediately. Literally nobody knows what's going to pop you just have to trust your gut, and or A/B test.
- I copied a current edit format that was working and posted fast. Social Media is very trend driven these days. Different trends and templates work at different times, and if you act FAST you usually get the best results. I saw 2 other posts with a similar format that had great engagement. I didn't think twice and I immediately set up my phone to film the next day. After my post, I probably saw another 15 like this but at that point the trend was sort of slowing down. Acting fast is important.
- The camera angle, editing, and lighting had thought out production. A few weeks before I filmed this, I set up the background in my studio to look the best on camera even in a small space. Even thinking as far as adding the plants added a little touch. I used an LED light to light myself (if you look close you can see it). More thought out camera angles and lightning look more professional. I even had watched a course on filming/editing content the month before knowing this would level up my content. Learned details like making sure it was 30 frames per sec, the optimal format for IG. Like your music, professional quality content is important.
